Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood: Phinney on Phinney
Taylor Phinney's pursuit win at the UCI World Cup in Los Angeles over the weekend sure makes us look smart for putting him and Danny Summerhill on our awards-issue cover. Thanks, Taylor. We gave the 17-year-old Phinney and 18-year-old Summerhill our “juniors of the year" award for their 2007 accomplishments, which included Summerhill's silver medal at the world junior cyclocross championship and Phinney's gold at the world junior time trial championship — the first-ever gold in that discipline for an American junior man. Phinney had begun his second season of racing with a virtual tie for the overall win in the Category 2 Tour of the Gila, racing against men twice his age. He next took the overall win at July's Tour l'Abitibi, then shocked the cycling community in October by winning the national pursuit title at his first-ever velodrome competition.

The next step in the rescue plan was for the group to make a trek to the radio tower and shut off a tape-loop rescue plea that also was interfering with any other transmissions. Ben (Michael Emerson), the less-than-trustworthy overlord of the Others, implored Jack (Matthew Fox), the survivors' reluctant leader, not to place the call to the freighter people. Jack sneered at Ben's words. The call was made, and the new episode began, much as last season's finale did, with Jack somewhere in the future — drinking. With this recently added flash-forward storytelling feature, Jack was seen in his Los Angeles kitchen mixing a morning cocktail when his eye fell on TV coverage of police in hot pursuit of a speeding motorist. In a scene back on the island (and back in time), the portly Hurley (Jorge Garcia) runs into Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who long ago had "gone native" and has no desire to ever leave the island.
Peace Symbol Says Style, Not Hope
The fact is that we live in a world no closer to nuclear disarmament than it was in 1958. Even here in supposedly peaceful Canada, we are in profound denial about the fact that we are a nation at war. Durable as they may be, I guess symbols can only achieve so much. Wow Bow doesn't have to do this. He doesn't. He can still make his name Bow Wow again. The rumor is that he got pissed off at Chris Brown and spit on his R&B counterpart. That's word to Omarion! Anyway apparently at a show in Dallas, Wow Bow ended his set off and accused Brown of messing up his set. How? I'm not sure how. Chris Brown is the headliner of the show, but I don't know what he did. Anyway, Wow Bow had to be restrained and out came the spit. I know this is only a rumor, but I have to ask: IS WOW BOW CRAZY?
Now that I got a good laugh out of that, you should know that Wow Bow has stated on the record that this never happened. Chris Brown hasn't issued any denial.
