ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Whoever said there is no such thing as coincidence wasn't in this quiet room this morning. The light touch of the computer keys addressing Amazon.com was the only sound. I was hoping to find a listing for a VHS or DVD video of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for our Fourth of July entertainment. As soon as I logged on with only that search in mind, Amazon managed to waylay my effort with temptations equaling Eve and the shiny apple: "Books we think you'll like." They base this assumption on books I've ordered in the past and today's offering was: "This is New York" by E. B. White with a new Introduction by Roger Angell. I had bought Pete Hammill's book, "My Manhattan," as well as A. E. Hotchner's "Elaine's." Amazon's assumptions were hardly a psychic reach. The excerpt they offered to further flavor the bite of the apple was page 20 and E.

But prime season is less than three months, so the real cost is $24,000 a month, or about $800 a day. And that's before you consider taxes, insurance, maintenance and utilities. This is not unique to Maine. Check the prices of waterfront houses on Cape Cod or Long Island, in Annapolis, Md., or anywhere along the Florida Coast, and waterfront is priced in multiples of $1 million. The same is true, in spades, on the West Coast. Anything on the water, anywhere, is the stuff of trophies — and priced accordingly... One answer: Buy a boat. It is possible to get on the water in a habitable boat for less than $30,000... Read or lsten to the rest of this Commentary by Scott Burns here. .
Starting Gate: Tipping Point?
Hillary Clinton's campaign didn't expect to win any of these contests for clear reasons. First, three of them were caucuses, which Obama's campaign has emphasized or organized for. Second, the one primary was in Louisiana, another southern state with a large chunk of black voters. The Clinton campaign has also begun downplaying their chances in tomorrow's "Potomac Primary," when Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC vote. All appear to be good territory for Obama, containing high numbers of voters who have sided with him throughout this process blacks, high-income and well-educated. Virginia may be a state where Clinton can challenge but recent polls show her far behind heading into the primary. A week later, Hawaii and Wisconsin vote, both good states for Obama. Clinton's camp and some outside observers, see her remaining strength in some of the big states coming up in March and April.
Microsoft's tardiness for documentation extends DOJ oversight to 2009
Scathing words yesterday from the federal judge overseeing Microsoft's compliance with its antitrust decree, accompanied an order that effectively extends the DOJ's oversight period into the next US presidential administration. Apparently agreeing with the European Commission's assessment that Microsoft has yet to provide adequate documentation for its communications protocols, US District Judge Kathleen Kollar-Kotelly issued an order yesterday extending the Dept. of Justice's oversight period for the company by two years, until November 12, 2009. .
OBEDIENCE
The strange thing about Williams was that nobody had ever seen him. The faculty guidebook showed a gray box labeled NOT PICTURED; group photos in the Winchester yearbooks only showed Williams’s hand or arm, even though the captions advertised his presence. The college’s website gave a brief curriculum vitae but no photographic evidence. By that Monday afternoon, the first day of classes for the fall term at Winchester University, the search for Williams had, for some of his students, become almost compulsive. It was as if Williams were hiding himself from them, as if he were teasing them somehow. It had become a tradition at Winchester for students to find a picture of their professors before classes began; in this way, it was commonly believed, they could allay some of the anxiety when the man or woman strode into the room.

Good and decent family man, too. You have a problem with China being Communist? You're a bit late: The US deals with, and recognizes, China. So does Australia and New Zealand. So you think the IG is a "communist military junta"? Were you just born stupid or have you been taking special education lessons to sharpen your dull wit? I think you should quit while you are slightly ahead: calm down, take a deep breath, reach for yr meds, gulp them down with some Fiji water.
The Technology Chronicles
Had the bidding not reached the reserve price, the FCC could have scrapped the C block auction and tried again without the open access condition that required the winner to connect all devices and applications. The open access rule is important for companies like Google, which can be assured that its applications and services are able to run freely on the new network. .
