SLU researchers to look at laser treatment for acne scars

ST on Monday, January 14, 2008

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Researchers at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine plan to test a special laser treatment that might improve acne scars on people with darker skin.

The scars are difficult to remove. Physicians usually treat the scars by removing the surface of the skin with powerful lasers or chemical treatments.

These treatments can cause discoloration for people with darker skin.

Dermatologists at Saint Louis University plan a clinical trial to see if a gentler laser treatment might help. The technique would use lasers that bypass the surface of the skin and stimulate collagen growth underneath.

Food Industry 1991-2000

According to some data, the food industry accounts for up to 60% of all direct foreign investments made in Russia after the crisis. This is not surprising, since market capacity, and hence food production, is growing steadily. Today, the domestic food industry is growing by 5-7% annually; in some sectors, this figure is 15-20%. In addition, the investment cycle of an average food-industry project is one and a half times shorter than for similar-sized investments in any other industry. Finally, food production (except for vodka) is not as politicized as the gas or oil industries. The result is the successful operation of tens of thousands of Russian and Western companies in their combined efforts to feed Russia.

Stanford men look to tighten grip on second place

PULLMAN, Wash. - In the highly competitive Pacific-10 Conference, story lines can change in a hurry. Take today's clash between No. 14 Stanford and No. 9 Washington State.

Two days ago, this was supposed to be a titanic matchup between the conference's second-place teams.

Now, after Cal's upset of the Cougars and the Cardinal's throttling of Washington, the game has taken on a slightly different plot:

For Stanford (17-3, 6-2 Pac-10), it's an opportunity to stay on UCLA's heels and put some distance between itself and the Cougars.

For Washington State (17-3, 5-3), it's a chance to restore order on its home court, where Thursday's loss was its first this season.

One statistic that doesn't bode well for the Cardinal: Washington State is 10-0 after losses under second-year coach Tony Bennett.

PREVIEW: SUNDERLAND v LATICS

Both Latics and Sunderland are both tied on 23 points in the Barclays Premier League which makes this a "six pointer".

It is only a month since both clubs met at the Stadium of Light in the E.ON sponsored F.A. Cup, and Latics ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. However, with both sides having changed almost half their starting line-ups as the league took a break, it's bound to be very different this time especially as both clubs making transfers during the January window.

Manager Roy Keane has boosted his defence with the signings of Manchester United pair Phil Bardsley and Jonny Evans. The former is a right back who has signed permanently for a fee of £2million whilst the latter is a Northern Ireland international on loan until the of the season.

The Black Cats also snapped up French Under 19 defender Jean Yves-Mvoto from Paris Saint Germain, who stands at an intimidating 6ft 4ins.
