Techspin: Capitalism and Its Discontents

As the people who really rule the world hobnob this week at the annual Davos meeting of the World Economic Forum, there's always a strong whiff of do-goodness to justify the gathering. So it was no surprise that Bill Gates, in his last appearance as chairman of Microsoft before retiring to run his foundation, decided to plead for a kinder, gentler capitalism.

In a speech to be delivered Thursday, Mr. Gates, one of the richest men in the world, will express concern that the benefits of capitalism seem to bypass the poorest people in the world. He is calling for companies to develop products aimed at the poor, products that will make a profit, of course, but will also improve the lives of the poorest.

Of course, social entrepreneurship is nothing new. But Mr.

Report says Michigan lags in creating high-wage jobs

Our best guess is that unless we substantially increase the proportion of college-educated adults, particularly in our biggest metropolitan areas, Michigan will continue to trend downward in the per capita income rankings," the study said.

The one bit of good news in the report is that Michigan gained 47,000 high-education, high-wage jobs in health care and education between 2000 and 2006.

About 40,000 of those jobs were added in Grand Rapids and Detroit.

Traditional economic development efforts are centered on using government financial incentives or cutting taxes to attract businesses and industries that will provide jobs for current residents.

But Glazer said governments can't accurately predict which industries will produce future job growth.

Causes of Rosacea No Longer a Mystery

Rosacea, a common inflammatory skin disease that causes facial redness, affects nearly 14 million Americans. There are well-known triggers can worsen rosacea condition: spicy foods, heat, alcohol, even embarrassment. But until now, no one could explain what caused rosacea. A team of researchers, led by Richard L. Gallo, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Dermatology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and the Dermatology section of the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, has determined that it is not one, but a combination of two abnormal factors, that result in rosacea. .

Ad nauseam

Don't you love the way the wife lovingly puts her head on his shoulder at the end, when in reality she'd likely be feral with sleep deprivation?

Men love beer. If that's stating the bleeding obvious, why are we still subjected to that revolting ad where the tongue leaves its owner in bed and hops out for a night on the town? It skitters across the road and into a party, scales the bath and drags home a Tooheys Extra Dry. The tongue's owner is confused about where the coldie came from, but one might bet his mouth tastes like a cocky's cage.

In the US, there's a cake-taker for Volkswagen. A man so loves his Volkswagen Jetta that, when he notices bird droppings on his car, he licks them off. Then he walks up to his girlfriend's door and gives her a kiss. She pauses, only momentarily, then blithely follows him to the car.

Vines: Priorities change for Strader

State Rep. Parkey Strader said battling liver cancer has given him a change in priorities, and "you will not see Parkey on the ballot again."

The Republican who represents the 14th District in northwest Knox County disclosed last week that he will not seek re-election after two terms. He previously served as property assessor, first getting elected in 1972 and serving until 2000. He then became chief deputy in the assessor's office.

Strader was diagnosed with cancer on July 5, 2006. A doctor at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston told him he could expect to live 13 months. It's now going on almost 1 1/2 years, he said. He's had multiple surgeries and other treatment.

"Prayers do work," he said.

Strader announced he is resigning as chief deputy to Knox County Property Assessor John Whitehead effective Dec.
